Charlie Morton (born 6 November 2003), known professionally as charmort,[1] is an Aotearoa musician, producer, composer and visual artist. He is known for his musical work in electronic styles such as techno, ambient, and braindance.[2] Publications including LOUD, Radioactive FM, and Salient have called Morton one of the finest creative young producers working now.[2]
Morton was raised in Tāmaki Makaurau and began producing and performing at small house shows in the early 2020s.[3] His debut EP charmort EP, self-released in 2022 brought Morton an early following; selling out a first-run of CDs in one day.[4] Beginning in 2023, Morton began providing original scores to short films and productions. His 2024 sophomore EP Viewfinder, garnered wider attention and popular acclaim. Morton has also provided services in the visual arts, directing and editing the video for From Nothing, the debut single by Tāmaki post-punk band Ballot Box, as well as leading design and artistic direction for his own releases.
Along with his longform releases, Morton also released the standalone single classics (2023) and composed for the dance studio Footnote. Morton’s most recent project Quadaural takes the form of a sound-installation, with plans for being adapted into a debut LP in 2025.
